Philly Style Maven: Mika, 24

I love living (and being a native of) The City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection, for so many reasons. One of those reasons being the fact that we have our own unique style that tells our stories uniquely and individually, while adding nods to what has already been established as “Philly style”.

I’m the girl that’s totally complimenting someone as they walk by, especially if their style aesthetic captures me and makes me yearn to know more about its intent. I marvel at the possibilities of what led them to pair their pieces together. Was it their mood, a rushed morning, a well contemplated schema, or just “how they dress”, as some describe to others. I’m sure I’m not the only one that does that, right?

In any event, I love style and all of its manifestations, and because of that I love to feature individuals who I feel embody what personal style is all about; uniqueness, purpose, and depth.

Today, I’m featuring Mika Gilbert, who is one of my former classmates from Middle school! She is a wonderful mother of two (might I add that her sons are SO stylish, too!), a hard-worker, and still finding time to make sure her personal style doesn’t fall by the wayside.

Mika Gilbert, 24.

From the outside looking in, Mika’s style screams “Daring and quirky, yet safe enough to still be comfortable.” She plays around with varying motifs, mixing and matching at the perfect levels. On a regular day, the lay is chic and comfortable to yield way to keep up with her two small boys, but on occasion, she makes sure to dazzle and turn heads for whoever is looking her way. She’s petite in stature, so it gives her the advantage of being able to flaunt many styling combinations; many of which always compliment her effortlessly.

She describes her style as being, “comfortable and chic because I’m always on the go, but I love to get glamorous, with a little edge, and sometimes playful depending on my mood. I have many different ways that I describe my style, and when getting dressed it just comes naturally…”

Spoken like a true style maven.

Here are a few more of my favorite style picks from Mika..

Philly Style Maven, Jenn: Epitomizing Style Unapologetically

Social media has connected me to so many people, near and far, that prove to be a source of inspiration in various aspects of my life. I’m multi-passionate, but one of my biggest passions is that of marveling at real style! Yeah, I love fashion in general, getting the latest on which designers have come out with what, who’s wearing it, and where they’re wearing it to, but nothing tops the way it all comes together. Style. Many people use style and fashion synonymously, but they really aren’t. Fashion, according to Merriam Webster, is defined as, “a popular way of dressing during a particular time or among a particular group of people”, style is “a particular way in which something is done, created, or performed”. See the difference? If you’re reading this, you probably already know that distinction and feel the same way I do. In any event, I love highlighting people I come across who have inspirational style filled with originality, authenticity, attitude, “wow” factor, and a unique point of view. Of course my definition of great style may be completely different from yours, but that’s the beauty of it!

Today I’m highlighting a beautiful woman, inside and out, that I started following about a year ago on Instagram. To sum up my assessment of her style, I’d say that it is daring and sexy, with a calm and effortless execution like only us Philly girls can do 😉 (kidding…but for real). Her style point of view leads her to show us looks that are unexpected, but work well together.  It is conditional and reflects her mood, the function she’s attending, or a combination of the two.  Oh, and she LOVES her labels, especially Chanel and Louboutin, but they definitely don’t define her. All around, she works with pieces that compliment her body type well and she also serves as a muse for the many designers she gives the opportunity to show their talent through custom design.

Here are some of my favorite style choices from Ms @Jenn_1 (as she’s known on the Gram). Dressed up, or on chill lay, love them all because style is always present regardless.

As you can see, there is much diversity in Jenn’s style. Always well put- together, but varying in stylistic approach. It definitely represents that philly girl style; feminine, but real laid back without looking like we tried too hard. If you know anything about Philadelphians, you know that we are calm, cool, and collected, but when you get on that other side, we get a little crazy and unpredictable. So, that’s what our style shows you.

Jenn, love ya style, girl! Keep slaying everything without thinking twice about it!

Sincerely,

~with style~,

Well, It’s Complicated…

Greetings friends,

I guess you’re probably assuming from the title that this post is going to be a tell-all about my young love, and how it’s complicated because he doesn’t want to settle down, I do, and we can’t seem to compromise because we are both stubborn. 17 Days of Fashion in Philly!

I’d be comfortable in saying that Philly is a fashionable city, a mix of this and that. There’s a mix of people who dress for comfort and are ok with just being…basic, those that like to be daring and bold giving distinctive personality to their attire, and ones who fall flat to fads. Philly has recently been booming with events specific to fashion, such as modeling competitions, fashion shows for a cause, and various other functions that allow those who live for fashion, to enjoy. The “17 Days of Fashion” was created by the founding members of The Philadelphia Fashion Consortium, with the purpose of celebrating Philadelphia’s growing fashion industry.

Over the course of 17 days, “17 Days of Fashion” will promote over 21 fashion shows and events, produced by Philadelphia’s local fashion designers, models, industry professionals, rising entrepreneurs, and those who just love fashion! Their mission is to create unity and create a place for all of these pieces of the puzzle to come together and to potentially build this series of events into what will be sought after not only by locals, but people world wide.

The 17 days of Fashion has a mission and a pledge that reads,  “We pledge our support to those participating in the17 Days of Fashion by providing resources, marketing and advertising support with an opportunity to highlight their expertise.”.The participation and support of Philadelphians and those in surrounding cities can work together to make this event bigger and better with each year’s passing.  I am looking so forward to attending some of these events, as I frequently attend events in NY which is a little ways away, and it’s great to be able to be in my own backyard and experience great fashion and passion from those who love it just as much as I do!  To view the full schedule of all events, visit http://www.17daysoffashion.com/ , hope to see you there and check back soon for updates on events from this great project!

Thanks for reading,
