A Change ‘Gon Come

Hey Everyone,

Long time no see! Many of you that follow me on social media probably know where I’ve been: in the deep end of finishing up my graduate degree! May 25th is the date, 8 p.m. is the time; I’ll be walking across the stage to receive my second degree, a masters in Fashion Marketing. It’s been quite a fun journey, but it has taken me away from my greatest creation for too long. In my time away, I’ve thought long and hard about the direction I would like my site to take and what this could mean for myself and you all.

I created The Runway Times in 2010 in my dorm room at Temple University. It afforded me so many amazing opportunities that I will never forget, but it’s time for a change. My focus has shifted, my vision is different, I’ve grown, and I must be intentional about what I deliver to you. While I love many aspects of the fashion industry, it all boils down to one thing for me: STYLE. When I am watching a runway show at NYFW, or walking down the streets of Philadelphia, you know what I pay the most attention to? It’s not the name strewn across the front of the shirt, or the ratio of when it was released in stores to when the person has it on; it is how they put it all together. The complete look, the artistic approach they took to getting dressed that day.

It does not matter what profession you’re in, either. The Children’s Librarian at my job has the most impeccable sense of style I have ever seen; everyday I’m drooling over her outfit styling and telling her that she just “gets it”. She will definitely be featured on The Style Degree. All in all, I just wanted to make you aware of some of the changes that will be happening over here. We will be putting The Runway Times in a beautiful time capsule, and welcoming The Style Degree to start anew.

I’m excited! I hope you are, too. If you’d like to receive updates, subscribe and posts will be delivered straight to your inbox. Can’t wait to see what’s in store.

With style,

Philly Style Maven: Mika, 24

I love living (and being a native of) The City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection, for so many reasons. One of those reasons being the fact that we have our own unique style that tells our stories uniquely and individually, while adding nods to what has already been established as “Philly style”.

I’m the girl that’s totally complimenting someone as they walk by, especially if their style aesthetic captures me and makes me yearn to know more about its intent. I marvel at the possibilities of what led them to pair their pieces together. Was it their mood, a rushed morning, a well contemplated schema, or just “how they dress”, as some describe to others. I’m sure I’m not the only one that does that, right?

In any event, I love style and all of its manifestations, and because of that I love to feature individuals who I feel embody what personal style is all about; uniqueness, purpose, and depth.

Today, I’m featuring Mika Gilbert, who is one of my former classmates from Middle school! She is a wonderful mother of two (might I add that her sons are SO stylish, too!), a hard-worker, and still finding time to make sure her personal style doesn’t fall by the wayside.

Mika Gilbert, 24.

From the outside looking in, Mika’s style screams “Daring and quirky, yet safe enough to still be comfortable.” She plays around with varying motifs, mixing and matching at the perfect levels. On a regular day, the lay is chic and comfortable to yield way to keep up with her two small boys, but on occasion, she makes sure to dazzle and turn heads for whoever is looking her way. She’s petite in stature, so it gives her the advantage of being able to flaunt many styling combinations; many of which always compliment her effortlessly.

She describes her style as being, “comfortable and chic because I’m always on the go, but I love to get glamorous, with a little edge, and sometimes playful depending on my mood. I have many different ways that I describe my style, and when getting dressed it just comes naturally…”

Spoken like a true style maven.

Here are a few more of my favorite style picks from Mika..

On The Radar: Dr.Michelle’s Effortless Style!

Hey fam!

Okay, so you all know Dr. Michelle, right? If you said no, we probably don’t know each other very well …(kidding…not kidding). Let me fill you in if you already don’t know. Dr. Michelle Callahan is the ultra cool relationship expert, developmental psychologist, author of Ms. Typed,  TV host (remember Wedlock or Deadlock? That was my show!), and motivational speaker. She’s one of those powerhouse women that little girls and women look up to because she lives as an example of hard work, purpose, and perseverance. I grew to know of Dr. Michelle years ago via her many platforms and social media, but it wasn’t until recently that I realized what a style maven she is!

Dr. Michelle Callahan

I like to say that an individual’s style speaks for them; it is personified. Whether it is a loud introduction, a soft spoken gesture, or a confident silence. For example, Gaga’s style voice says, “ROARRR! Never know what to expect from me!”, and Rihanna’s says, “Yeah, I know I’m the sh*t”. You see where I’m coming from? Upon writing this post, I thought to assess my take on Dr. Michelle’s style voice, and to me its tone has a sophisticated and demure, yet bold sexiness about it. It has a daring edge with boundaries of class and sophistication; the perfect combo! And with that, she’s so low-key about it. Let’s take a look at some of my fav fashion moments from Dr. Michelle’s closet!

Dr. Michelle IF I had to define Dr. Michelle’s style by a signature  look, it would be by the one above. Her ensembles are tastefully  sleek, many incorporate hints of sheer or lace for an added element of femininity and contrast, but just enough to serve that purpose. Always classy. This lace-detailed frock is Dolce & Gabbana, and it is on point!

Oh, she’s not afraid of color either! Absolutely love this vibrantly hued Herve Leger bandage dress, lending a nod to Doc’s sassy side. Owww! Chic simplicity.

Okay, so those were ‘fits’ for events, but her everyday style is just as rockin’. See…

Doc posted these on IG the other day, and when I professed my love for the look, she said she went for a high/low mix with this one. “Shirt: Tom Ford, shorts: Club Monaco, shoes: Chanel” Oh, and don’t tell anyone you got this from me, but I think she has a sliigghhhttttttt obsession with Chanel. But you didn’t get that from me, and of all obsessions I’ve ever heard of, that’s one I’d like to have some day!..haha.

Here’s a few more for GP…

Dress & python bag is Chanel, shoes Louis Vuitton. Done.

PAUSE, I NEED this jacket in my life!!! It’s Chanel and I hear it comes with a detachable cape. I can’t with life right now.

…And her accessories aren’t off topic either… Alexander McQueen stilettos and Chanel on her wrist. I don’t think anybody is checking for her. Nope.

Doc, we see you stylin’ on ’em! Now you’re on the radar, and we’re watching! Thanks for your unique style point of view, you give fellow style lovers liiiiiife and confirmation that it’s not all about what the labels say, but more about the unique compilation of a look!

Sincerely,

~with style~,

Pinning Up with Bettie Page in Boston!

Dear friends,

I decided to take a quick stay-cay to Boston to visit my dearest sister-friend,  Santara of The Gorgeous Ingredient. Bean Town is by far one of the most beautiful cities to visit, with varying neighborhoods and treasures for people to explore.

With that being the case, it’s sometimes hard to pick the perfect spots to hit when you only have a couple of days to spare. We decided on Newbury Street, a famously well-known strip with luxury shops and boutiques,  good eats, and stylish people. The area surrounding is quite affluent, so it reminded me much of NYC’s Madison Ave, but a much more sedated version.

We stumbled upon the Bettie Page boutique with a window that reeked of retro, Hollywood glamour with a 50’s pin-up spin. I HAD to go in.

I walked in and nearly lost my entire mind. I mean…. wow. All of my style dreams came true; all of the authentic 50’s and 60’s inspired apparel that leaves me in awe from images of time’s past were in front of me. I went from rack to rack, scowering through A-line dresses with cut-outs, sinched waists, and intricate details that no contemporary frock would be able to imitate.  Two-piece ensembles with the choice of bandeau or push-up styles, high waist shorts and swimwear bottoms that were made that way and not forced into submission by someone who couldn’t find the real ones. I mean, it was like a kid being in a candy store for me. Of course I tried things on!

For my wild side!

This swim suit is made to be shown off, not for water!

We probably spent a good hour-and-a-half in that place, and it was well worth it. What I decided to purchase was a t-shirt (I know you’re like “huh?”)…well, I decided I wanted to take a piece of Boston,’s Bettie Page home, but that I’d just go to the Philly location to SHOP shop so I wouldn’t have so much to take back on my travels.

Of course the sales associates made our experience very pleasant, and they emulated what Bettie Page represents,  retro glam! I was so captivated by her look; she nailed this!

Serve! Style degree= 100· F!

I absolutely loved my experience at this gem of a style heaven. Amazing clothing selection, friendly staff, and outstanding atmospherics to set the mood of Bettie Page’s classic era. Guess what else? As I was posting photos on Instagram, a few people told me that there is a Bettie Page in Philly!!! What?! HOW on earth did I miss that?! I should be ashamed. In any event, I am now en route back to Philly and I will be paying them a visit real soon! My graduation dress is going to be graaaaand, darling.
